Shopping for a Bed for Your Bedroom

Designing and decorating your bedroom is very easy, as long as you choose a good bed or mattress that can be worked with. It is the centerpiece of the whole room because of its sheer size and how it is positioned in the room. Needless to say, if you are shopping for a bed or a new mattress, it should not only look good but it should also have good performance. If you think about it, the bed is the one piece of furniture that we spend the most time in so if buying a new one, I personally recommend that you go all out and don’t skimp on your budget. However, don’t just buy the most expensive one, buy the one that offers the most value for your hard earned cash.

Choosing the type of mattress

If this is your first time buying a mattress, you will realize that it is not as straightforward as choosing a brand or model and buying it. It is more complicated if you want to get the best out of your money and a lot of research will have to be done. The first of which is learning about the different mattress types and how they differ from one another. Each type of mattress has its own advantages and disadvantages and you just have to choose which ones work best for you.

There are two general types of mattresses; spring and spring-less. Spring mattresses are the traditional innerspring mattress and there are different types of spring systems that can be used. The most popular of which is the pocketed coil spring system. As for spring-less, memory foams, latex, air beds and pretty much any mattress that doesn’t have a spring core. In this guide, we will focus on the three most popular and most commonly used mattresses.

Innerspring is just as its name suggests, a mattress that has a spring in its core. The support layer of the mattress is made of hundreds of springs and the comfort layer is made of various materials such as regular foam, memory foam, latex, specialty foam and more. This is a very popular type of mattress and even though it is considered old, it is still one of the best selling type of mattresses.

One of the biggest advantages of an innerspring or spring mattress is its price relative to memory foam and latex. It is cheaper especially when it comes to the high end models/products. It is one of the most popular type of mattresses so there are a lot of options to choose from and for every budget range, there are great offers that are definitely worth the money. Memory Foam

Memory foam is the most popular type of mattress right now because it has a lot of features that can truly improve your sleep. It is a springless mattress with a standard foam at its core and memory foam in the comfort layer. Memory foam is a fairly new technology and the company that made it popular is Tempur-pedic.

The biggest advantage of memory foam over other mattress types is its ability to conform to your body while you are sleeping. Think of it like your body is enveloped in foam as you sleep. This is very comfortable and it can really help improve your sleep.

The biggest drawback however, is the retention of heat. As your body is enveloped in foam, heat is trapped and making it warm. Fortunately, there are newer types of memory foam that improves upon this. These newer memory foams don’t eliminate the heat entirely but it does improve the temperature as you sleep.

Latex is the most uncommon mattress type that you can find among the three. However, personally, I think this is the best type of mattress because it is the most durable and I find it to be the most comfortable. I am not really a fan of the sinking effect of memory foam and the accompanying heat that comes with it. With latex, the comfort is just right. It conforms to the body but it won’t envelope it, resulting in heat.

It also relieves pressure due to how it contours to your body, just like memory foam. Another advantage of latex is that it is naturally hypoallergenic and mites and microbe resistant. The biggest drawback is its price. I’m talking about an all latex mattress because there are two types; all latex and hybrid latex. All latex has latex in the entire mattress while hybrids either have a latex support with a different comfort layer or latex comfort layer with a different foam in the support layer. I don’t see the point in buying a hybrid as it negates one of the advantages of latex which is durability and longevity.

As I was saying, all latex mattresses are very expensive. You should expect to pay at least $1,500 for a decent all latex mattress and the price goes up even further for the good ones.

This will be a series on how to buy a mattress so stay tuned for part two.

Preparing for the Winter

The title sounds so dramatic but it really isn’t. This is just a simple guide and tips on how to prepare your home come winter time. Some winter decors and actually preparing your home to combat the cold. Without further ado, here they are.

  • Curtains

A great first step in preparing your house during winter seasons starts with your window curtains or drapes. A winter themed one will absolutely look fantastic while also serving an important function of warming the area. It will add an additional layer of barrier to counter the cold weather and guests as well as people passing by will appreciate the look if you opt to go for one with a winter themed style.

  • Rugs and Carpets

Rugs and carpets, much like the curtains, also do a double duty when it comes to function and design. It adds additional insulation, especially in areas of the house that are traffic heavy and with a good design, it can improve the overall look of your home.

  • Couch and Sofas

Adding a layer of cushion in your sofa will help in keeping it warm for you to be comfortable on. You can even go further and add sheets and bedding with winter themes on it to both improve the heating and the look of your sofas.

  • Sealing all drafts

This one is all about improving the heating of your entire home. You need to find all drafts in your house and seal them so that wind will not penetrate your house, causing it to lower the temperature even further. This might involve some work but in the end, it will be worth it because a warm house during winter is a necessity.

To seal the drafts, you need to employ either permanent solutions like caulking or weather stripping or temporary ones like towels or other thick fabrics to cover the sources. It’s up to you and if you have the budget, you should definitely opt for the permanent solutions so that you only do it this one time.

Tips for Redecorating your Home

I’ll start out this blog with some tips to help you redecorate your home.

A visually appealing and comfortable home is what everybody wants to go home to after a long day at work or even at school. Decorating your home so that the flaws are very well hidden if not completely eradicated and the strong points emphasized will take a lot of time and resources and not everybody has both. Here are some easy tips that I have found to be helpful, even on a tight budget.

Rearrange your sofa

A simple rearranging of your sofa can greatly improve the overall feel and look of your living room. If you have guests over frequently or even if it’s just you and your family sitting in the living room, a sofa arrangement wherein conversation is promoted will have a great effect on the feel of your home. Setting it in a U-shape formation or two sides facing each other can generate conversations more frequently. And healthy conversation with friends and family is always a good thing.

Don’t block the sun

Natural lighting will always be better than artificial. Having said that, if your house has an abundance of windows, take advantage of the sun. You can go for a contrasting look of heavy colored drapes but tied up or you can also go with a light colored theme that lets sunshine pass through.

You don’t have to pay someone to declutter your home, that’s ridiculous. This is very easy to do and you don’t have to spend a dime to do something that you can do yourself.

A mirror makes a room seem more spacious and bigger than it actually is

Having a mirror in every room makes it look more spacious strategically placing it opposite of windows will make the room brighter as it can bounce off the natural sunlight. It doesn’t have to be the biggest window or the most expensive one that you can find. Even the budget ones with minimalistic designs or even frameless ones will be very good in improving the look and feel of your home.

Light and neutral colors

For this one, you may have to spend a little more than usual but it is a one time thing and it will improve your home for the best. Repainting the interior of your home with light and neutral colors will make it seem more spacious and brighter, improving the flow and feel of your house. This is basically the same concept as having mirrors in every room, the goal is to improve the flow of the house and make it larger than it actually is.

Having light and neutral colors will also make it easier to decorate your house due to its flexibility with color combinations. you can buy dark or light colored furniture and you won’t have a problem with overall look and flow. is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to
