A good sound system will cost you a lot of money if you want a really good sound. There are a lot of components to building a great sound system and of course, the main players are the speakers themselves. However, these speakers are not going to do much without the proper amplification and sources. Amplifiers and decoders are also very important in order to play good sounding music or watch a movie/play games in glorious surround sound.
You also have to factor the size of the room, if the speakers are mainly for music or movies, if you want surround or you are fine with stereo, a subwoofer and a lot more. Of course, the very first consideration should be your budget. You have to set a budget and stick with it because people that start with this hobby tend to spend too much for things that they don’t really need and end up overspending. If you have the money to spare, then by all means, get the best that you can afford but if you are like the rest of us that have limited budgets, then you should definitely try to avoid overspending and get the best value items.
The speakers are the heart and soul of your home theater. Without it, there won’t be any sound, obviously, and if you have low quality and bad sounding speakers, no matter what you do such as tweaking settings or speaker placements, it won’t get better. I recommend that you get the best model that you can afford. If you are planning on a multi speaker setup, you should start with getting the best front speakers that you can afford and then adjust your budget for the other speakers. If you are content with a stereo system, you should allocate most of your budget for the best speakers that you can afford.
The Micca MB42X is the best bang for the buck speaker in the market. It is very versatile and can be used as your front speakers, rear surrounds or side surrounds. It is very small with dimensions of 9.5 x 5.8 x 6.5 (inches). However, don’t let the small size put you off if you want big sounds. This speaker is more than capable of producing good quality sound with its 4 inch woofer and .75 inch silk dome tweeter.
The size of this speaker makes it easier for placement and as I said above, it can be used in the rear or sides if you ever decide to upgrade the front speakers to towers. I recommend this highly and I actually own a pair that I use as speaker computers although the model that I have is the powered ones. The Fluance SX6 is another great speaker set that I can recommend. The sound that comes out from these babies are great and full. It has a 1 inch tweeter and a 5 inch woofer and it is bigger than the Miccas with dimensions of 13.5 x 8.3 x 9.1 inches. The only thing I don’t like about these speakers is that they are quite ugly to look at but if you don’t care about looks, this is definitely a winner.
Wharfedale Diamond 220
Wharfedale is the brand of choice in Britain and it’s slowly gaining popularity in the US. These speakers are a bit warm sounding so if you prefer that, this is the one to get. It’s pretty close to the size of the Fluance with dimensions of 12.4 x 6.9 x 9.8 inches with a 1 inch tweeter and a 5.1 inch woofer. The speakers are fun to listen to without the risk of listening fatigue due to the warm and flat tone. I highly recommend these speakers if you have the budget to spend.
It is available in Black, Walnut, Rosewood, and White. Tip: Get the white ones, they are gorgeous.
Well, these are my recommendations for speakers on a budget. These speakers produce great sound for the money and they are very versatile, in case you want to upgrade later on. There are many more speakers in the market and it’s virtually impossible to determine the best one, at least for me, as I am no audiophile and I don’t have the money to spend on those speakers that cost thousands of dollars. For now, these are the ones that I can recommend to others on a budget.
